Match preview: MFM versus Rivers United

The Agege Stadium will literally be on fire on Wednesday afternoon when two unbeaten sides in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL); Mountain of Fire (MFM) FC and Rivers United FC file out in oneof the standout fixtures of match day two.

MFM upstaged the applecart on match day one by beating highly-rated Nasarawa United 2-1 on the road.

A first half double from Chukwuka Emmanuel and Musa Newman rendered Ifeanyi Nweke’s 75th minute effort for the hosts purely academic as the newboys laid down the marker in comprehensive fashion.

“I was not surprised with the win over Nasarawa United because we have players that have been together since 2007.

“We are one big family and we have a lot up our sleeves this season,” Chairman of the club, Godwin Enakhena told Rivers UnitedMedia.

On Wednesday, MFM will have home advantage plus the comfort of having their fans in numbers, cheering to the rafters and baying for blood against a Rivers United side that started their campaign on a flyer.

United stunned, seven-time champions, Enyimba 1-0 at the Yakubu Gowon (former Liberation) Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Obomate Frederick was the hero of the day; his swerving free kick from 25 yards completely hoodwinked Femi Thomas in goal for Enyimba and guranteed the points for the Port Harcourt club.

United’s technical manager, Stanley Eguma refused to be carried away by the win over Enyimba and insisted that the victory “is not a big deal”.

He added that the side will be more compact and fluid when they face MFM on Wednesday.

“We have a few players who we have not registered. By the time they come in, we will have a much better team than what we fielded against Enyimba,” he said.

Two players who missed the game against Enyimba have travelled with the squad to Lagos.

They are Ivoirian Damian Venance and Ghanian forward, who was a goal scoring machine for Dolphins FC last season.

He added that his side will show the opposition respect, noting that their status as a newly-promoted club does not mean they are underdogs.

“The game against MFM is a big game. They are a big team becaue they are in the top flight and will also pose a threath to our ambitions in the league.

“We will go there with our complete Arsenal. We want all maximum points and will not relent,” he said.

The game will kick off at 4pm at the Agege Stadium.
