Supporters of Senator Magnus Abe, and the member representing Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dakuku Peterside, are locked in a battle of supremacy in Rivers South-East Senatorial District. The two political leaders are loyalists of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, and are in the All Progressive Congress (APC) with him.
Before the 2011 elections, Abe served Governor Amaechi as Secretary to the State Government, while Peterside held sway as Works Commissioner.
The two legislators are also locked in a hot backstage battle to succeed Amaechi in 2015.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state is therefore blaming the violent that erupted during the APC membership registration exercise in the political bloc to an intense struggle between the two leaders, to direct the process in the area.
In an online statement to AkanimoReports on Friday, PDP says their hands are clean in the worrisome crisis rocking the APC membership registration exercise in the oil and gas state.
Spokesman for the Chair of the party in the state, Jerry Needam, says PDP has no business interfering in the exercise and should therefore, not be blamed for the woes experienced in the registration process.
”We are aware of the infighting and struggle by chieftains of the APC, who maintain various camps and whose quest is to control the party structure in their respective local government areas and wards. It is this quest for supremacy of the party by leaders that is responsible for the sad and avoidable problems witnessed in the registration process of the party”, PDP said.
Continuing, PDP said APC played out their internal differences on Thursday, at the gate of the Deputy Governor’s Lodge, along Ernest Ikoli Street, Old GRA, Port Harcourt. ”State Chairman of the APC, Mr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, in company of his supporters, had a rumpus with the Deputy Governor and his supporters, on who collects and distributes the registration materials for the exercise in Andoni communities, their local government area”, the party said.
They appealed to APC not to allow what ought to have been a peaceful exercise to be a source of tension and crisis in the crisis-ridden state.
